Can't Follow Someone on Instagram? 7 Causes and Fixes
Answer first: The most common reason you can't follow someone on Instagram is hitting the hourly or daily follow limit (roughly 60 follows per hour, 200 per day). Other causes include being blocked, your account being temporarily restricted, or the target account being set to private.
Follow limits exist to prevent spam and bot behavior. Instagram monitors follow speed and volume to protect the platform from mass-following operations.
Reason 1: Follow limit reached
Instagram enforces hourly and daily follow limits to prevent spam.
Wait 24 hours for the daily limit to reset. Space out your follows going forward.
Reason 2: You have been blocked
If someone blocks you, you cannot follow them.
You can check whether you are blocked by searching for the username.
Reason 3: Account is private and hasn't accepted
If an account is private, you must send a follow request and wait for the account owner to approve it.
Private accounts control who can follow them.
Reason 4: Your account is temporarily restricted
If your account has violated Instagram's terms or triggered automated spam detection, you may be temporarily restricted.
Check your account status in Settings and privacy, Account status.
Reason 5: Technical glitch or app issue
Sometimes a technical glitch prevents the follow action from completing.
Force-quit the app and reopen it. Try following again on a different network.
